Dr. Hughes Lansing is a pediatric (child clinical health) psychologist.

Her primary research interest is in examining health behaviors and outcomes in youths with chronic health conditions and their families and translating that knowledge into scalable interventions.  Dr. Hughes Lansing’s research incorporates mobile sensing, intensive longitudinal modeling, and technology-delivered health behavior interventions from a multi-level systems perspective. Her work is interdisciplinary, collaborating with teams from pediatric specialty care, patients, and community systems. Current projects focus on improving outcomes in youths with type 1 diabetes and in families with a child with congenital heart disease as well as prevention of problematic substance use in emerging adults with chronic pain.

Despite progress in the identification of effective behavioral medicine interventions for youths and families, five of the six leading causes of mortality in the US remain potentially preventable (CDC, 2017). Inadequate empirical precision in conceptual models of health risk behavior engagement and failures to continuously optimize multicomponent biobehavioral interventions in real world contexts contributes to this problem. Our lab’s mission is to address these limitations by:

  1. Identifying complex biobehavioral and biosocial systems that support health behavior regulation in youths’ and families’ daily lives to create empirically precise conceptual models
  2. Optimizing scalable and pragmatic biobehavioral interventions to improve access to health promoting interventions for youths and families at greatest risk
  3. Testing advanced technologies and methods that facilitate the development of empirically precise conceptual models and biobehavioral interventions for youths and families.
