mortar boardCongratulations to CAS 2020 Graduates!

Each year we mark our calendars for Commencement Day at UVM, when faculty and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences look forward to honoring each graduate in person on the green in front of Waterman Hall. Sadly COVID-19 makes it impossible for us to safely assemble to celebrate together. We're offering this website to honor you, the Class of 2020.

Below are four poems written for this occasion, two by English Professors Maria Hummel and Major Jackson, and two by members of the Class of 2020, Neville Caulfield and Sunny Nagpaul.

Scroll down to find more information about our graduates, listed by major. Under each department or program, you’ll also find details about award winners, theses completed, and memberships in departmental/program honor societies, along with congratulatory messages from the faculty.

    UVM Phi Beta Kappa Inductees

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the United States. It recognizes outstanding performance in the liberal arts and sciences and derives its name from the Greek phrase Philosophia Biou Kybernetes: “Love of wisdom is the guide of life.” The chapter at the University of Vermont was chartered in 1848, making it the eleventh chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in the U.S. It is the first chapter in the nation to elect women and African Americans to its membership. Since 1848, approximately 4,200 UVM students have been inducted. CAS inductees are listed below.

Together apart - UVM Symphony Orchestra creates digital performance

UVM’s Symphony Orchestra had practiced intensively for an April 4 performance when COVID-19 intervened. Orchestra members were devastated, said conductor Yutaka Kono, when they learned they couldn’t play together as a group. Kono, who is also an instructor in the music department’s music technology program, decided he would have to do something “unique” to fill the void. Listen to the performance.
