CAMPUS ARCHITECTURE TIMELINE

178 So. Prospect Street

This Greek Revival style house was built in 1850-51 for Nathan S. Hill soon after he was appointed treasurer of the University of Vermont. In 1861, Hill built a larger home next door at 194 South Prospect Street and sold his former home to Mathew Henry Buckham. Buckham was a professor at the University and was appointed its president in 1871. The noted philosopher and educator, John Dewey, lived here with his parents while a student at UVM during the late 1870s.

Sunsequent occupants of the house include: Prof. William Votey, dean of the UVM Engineering College; Sherman R. Moulton, Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court, who died here in 1949; and Richard H. Wadhams, co-owner of the Lake Champlain Trasportation Company. Wadhams sold the house to the University of Vermont in 1970. UVM converted it into offices for use by the undergraduate admissions department.
