After Dr. Blauwiekel graduated from Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in the late 1970s, she moved to Vermont and started working with dairy cattle. She worked in Brattleboro for six years in a large and small animal veterinary practice, but continued to work mainly with dairy cattle. She left Vermont to pursue graduate school, coming back 20 years later to take the position of University Veterinarian. As the University Veterinarian, she has oversight of all the animals at the University, including the laboratory mice and rats used in biomedical research and has Board Certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine. Ruth especially enjoys working with the students at UVM, stating "As I work with students at UVM I always keep in mind the importance of mentoring and encouraging young people -- they are our future, after all!"
