How many credits do I need to complete the Master of Accountancy Program?

The University of Vermont’s Master of Accountancy Program is comprised of 10 courses and 30 credits, helping you meet the 150 credit hour requirements for CPA certification.

How long does it take to complete the MAcc program?

Students who meet the prerequisite requirements can complete the MAcc program in one year or less. Students whose undergraduate degree is not in a business-related discipline will likely require at least 16 months to complete the program. 

Do I have to select a track?

While the UVM MAcc Program offers specialized tracks in tax, auditing & financial reporting, and sustainability, students may either select a track or choose to take a variety of accounting electives when completing the Program.

Can I start the MAcc program anytime?

Yes. The traditional start date is fall, but some students begin during the summer semester to take advantage of condensed summer courses offered. Spring admission is less common. Most international students are not allowed to begin taking courses over the summer due to visa restrictions.

When will I hear whether I have been accepted into the Master of Accountancy program?

Applications are reviewed after all supporting materials are received by the Graduate College. Complete applications are reviewed on a weekly basis.

What are the prerequisites for the MAcc program?

To be considered by the Graduate Studies Committee, applicants to the Master of Accountancy must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • 4-year Bachelor’s degree
  • 2.75 (4.0 scale) overall GPA
  • International students only: TOEFL of 90 or IELTS of 7.0.

Note: The GMAT is no longer required; however, students are welcome to submit a score to strengthen their application.

  • Principles of Financial Accounting (Introductory Financial Accounting)
  • Principles of Managerial Accounting (Introductory Managerial Accounting)
  • Corporate Financial Reporting 1 (Intermediate Accounting 1)
  • Corporate Financial Reporting 2 (Intermediate Accounting 2)

Students with undergraduate business degrees have likely completed most of the 5 prerequisite requirements. All applicants must complete principles of financial accounting (or have prior accounting experience) before beginning the program. Students may complete Corporate Financial Reporting 1 & 2 as part of the MAcc program. This adds six (6) credits hours to the 30-hour program.

Does the UVM MAcc have STEM designation?

Yes. UVM's MAcc program has been approed for the STEM designation beginning in either fall 2023 or 2024. Please check with the MAcc Program Director for more details.
