" Thank you to all who attended the retreat. A lot of great ideas were generated and the 2001-2002 Academic year promises to be a busy and exciting one for ALCO!

This session, which will be summarized below, explores logistical information
(meeting times, meeting structures) that reviews who should regularly share
information with ALCO, including groups such as Board of trustees, President,
Provost, Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity, Center for Cultural Pluralism,
the ALANA Student Center, Special Advisor to the Provost, etc. and how often.
The outcome will be to develop two options of scheduled meetings, structure
of the meetings and scheduled elections for the final 2001-2002 Academic Year.
Suggestions for Format Structure:
- Structure through themes: stated facilitator working with presentations
1 semester meeting to report back on events
Regular meeting will remain social in function
Have on-campus plenaries

Retreat at start of the year to define the themes

Items for ALCO to pursue in the next academic year (in order of preference by attendees)
Develop a brochure for new ALANA faculty, staff and students; and for recruiting purposes (note: ALANA Liaisons organized through the Office of Affirmative Action is working on such a brochure)
Publish an ALCO newsletter for the UVM campus community and beyond
Write an article for the RECORD on ALCO
Connect with 1) faculty union, 2) staff council, 3) police services
Have a monthly dinner to discuss diversity issues at an ethnic restaurant
Run a cooking workshop on ethnic foods -- their uses, origins, preparation, etc.
Conduct an "ISM" poetry contest; announce winners on the WEB, in the Cynic, in the Record
Prepare sessions on what to do to respond to hate crimes/bias incidents on campus
