UVM Season Ticket Holders and Victory Club Members,
I’m writing to share some thoughts with you about what occurred prior to our men’s exhibition basketball game on Saturday night vs. St. Michael’s College. For those of you who aren’t aware, a group of St. Michael’s players and coaches knelt silently during the national anthem. They were met with negative comments from some of the spectators in attendance that in a few cases crossed a line into reactions that were seen as harassing.
I realize that there are varying perspectives on the issue of kneeling during the anthem and I respect the differing opinions that exist. However, I also want to emphasize that the University and Athletic Department are committed to ensuring that our student-athletes and coaches, visiting teams, and fans are able to participate and experience our games in an environment that is free from threats, intimidation, and/or harassment.
UVM is known for our passionate, loyal, and respectful fans. You help create a collegiate environment that is the envy of schools throughout the region and with your help, I know that this tradition will continue.
Thank you for your support of our program, our student-athletes, and our University.
Jeff Schulman, Director of Athletics
