HST 397 – American Slavery

Credits: 3.00

Course Description: Directed individual study of areas not appropriately covered by existing courses. Prerequisite: Instructor permission.

Section Description: This is a course devoted to the study of slavery in the United States, but it also touches on the institution elsewhere in the New World. We will examine different forms of slavery ranging from mid-eighteenth century Boston to Abraham Lincoln's views of human bondage. We will read deeply about the plight of male and female slaves along with the motivations of slave-owners. This is a very serious and challenging class. I encourage all motivated students to take this course. Prerequisites: History Graduate students only.
