Course Description: Topics in Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature. Subjects vary by semester. Representative topics: Tolkien's Middle Earth; The Hobbit; Survey of Science Fiction and Fantasy. May be repeated for credit with different content.

Section Description: This course interrogates the cinematic adaptations to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and Th Hobbit. We’ll look closely at texts by Peter Jackson, Ralph Bakshi, and Jules Bass and compare passages form the novel with scenes from the films. Scholarship on film theory and on Tolkien’s legendarium will deepen and enrich our investigations.
