Course Description: Private instruction for music majors on an elective, non- required secondary instrument/voice. Subject to staff availability. Lab fee required. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: Music majors; successful completion of Level II Examination.
Section Description: Applied Vocal Jazz Lessons MUL 033N, 034N, 044N, 074N, 133N, 134N, 234N Amber deLaurentis – email@example.com Course Credit Applied jazz voice lessons are available for one or two credit hours. Students enrolled for one credit receive half-hour weekly lessons, while students enrolled for two credits receive one-hour weekly lessons. Non-majors may be required to perform a lesson audition before they are accepted for study; this audition may be formal or informal at the discretion of the teacher. Music majors are required to successfully complete a music major audition (Level II) before they are accepted for study in MU 134, and an Intermediate Level Examination (Level III) before acceptance for study in MU 234. Attendance Attendance at all lessons is a course requirement. If I cancel a lesson, I will schedule a make-up lesson with you. If you need to cancel a lesson, please inform me by e-mail or, if on the day of your lesson, by text (preferable) or voice mail. You will not be penalized if you need to cancel due to illness, emergency, religious observation or other legitimate reason, as long as there is sufficient notice. You will, however, be penalized if you do not show up without prior notice. Due to my limited availability, I do not offer student-cancelled make-up lessons, except for music majors preparing for a student recital or their Level III or IV auditions, should the need for an additional lesson(s) be necessary. Majors: I will do no more than two student-cancelled make-up lessons in one semester. My attendance at a Level III or IV (or any other) rehearsal counts as a lesson. Practice/Lessons Music majors should plan to practice one hour daily. Minors and non-majors should practice between one half hour and one hour daily. Listening to recordings is a vital part of your practice routine. I have uploaded a number of recordings at http://www.uvm.edu/~adelaure/. Important: In lessons, there is some learning by ear, especially when working on improvisation, but I prefer to prioritize learning repertoire through reading (especially if you don’t already read music). Therefore, I have students work on being able to play melodies on piano and learning basic piano harmony (e.g. all major scales with one hand, triads/seventh chords and some cadences), or what I refer to as "piano for singers.” (If you have some background in piano and would like to focus on accompanying yourself while singing, I will also work with you on developing that skill.) Lessons always start with piano homework. Depending on how prepared you are, time at the piano takes anywhere from 10-40% of lesson time. I do not teach solely by ear, so if you do not want to learn to read music or do any work at the piano, you might want to reconsider studying with me. Majors must be able to read music. For non-majors, reading music is not required but helpful. I prefer to end the teaching portion of each lesson five minutes before the end for questions and writing any homework down. Please bring a three-ring binder and pencil to all meetings. Majors must be able to read music. For non-majors, reading music is not required, but helpful. I prefer to work on at least two contrasting pieces at a time. The majority of your semester’s repertoire should be memorized. When you are ready, some lesson time will be spent learning how to generate charts on Sibelius, so you can start building your own library of songs in your key! For students taking two credits, a percentage of lesson time will be spent at the piano learning basic chords and harmony. It is important that you take time during each lesson to write down your homework. Lessons will often end five minutes early so there is sufficient time to discuss/write down what is expected for the next lesson. Applied Lesson Register At the final lesson of each semester, you will submit to me an Applied Lesson Register, listing repertoire studied during the semester. No grade will be given until the Applied Lesson Register has been completed. Jury Performances Music majors (excluding first semester of study) are required to perform a jazz jury at the end of the semester. This is an exam where you perform one or two selected pieces for a group of jazz faculty. In grading your jury, certain questions will be asked such as: did sections of the performance seem disconnected, or are you able to combine the various parts of the piece (measures, phrases, sections of the form) into a whole? If improvising, are you demonstrating an understanding of the tempo, time feel, and form of the tune? Is your improvisation limited to a small range and group of notes, or does it depict the chord progression in more detail? Is there contract in dynamics and articulation throughout your performance? Student Recital Performance Music majors must perform on two student recitals prior to being eligible for an Intermediate Level Examination (Level III), and another two recitals prior to being eligible for a Solo Recital Examination (Level IV) – if required. Please contact the Department Office if you have questions about this requirement. Grading Attendance, progress, and practice time are equally contributing factors. I keep weekly notes on progress.
