Section Description: Instructor: Chong Ho Kim (instructor name will be added to course at the beginning of the Spring semester) Diversity: This course has been approved to fulfill the university’s D2 general education requirement. Description: This course will survey various traditional drama/dance/theatre forms in Asia, including performance traditions from China, Korea, Japan, India and Indonesia, focusing on the religious, historical, and cultural backgrounds. Beijing Opera (China), Noh/Bunraku/Kabuki/Butoh (Japan), Sandae-Guk/Salpuri (Korea), Kathakali/Bharatha Natyam (India), and Wayang Kulit (Indonesia) are the major dance/drama forms that will be discussed. How these forms are surviving and thriving in modern times and their impact on Western countries will be also examined.
