MU 009 – Music Theory Fundamentals

Credits: 3.00

Course Description: Fundamentals of music notation, rhythm, melody, scales, and harmony. A course for non-majors or for students preparing to enter MU 109. May not be counted toward the major.

Section Description: An introduction to the fundamentals of music theory, including rhythm, pitch, notation, melody, scales, keys, and harmony. This class is not designed for music majors or for those who already have an extensive background in music. It can, however, be used to prepare students for entry into MU 103 Jazz Harmony or MU 109 Harmony and Form I if they lack the prerequisite skills. A text such as William Duckworth’s A Creative Approach to Music Fundamentals or Jane Piper Clendinning, Elizabeth West Marvin, and Joel Phillips’s The Musician’s Guide to Fundamentals will be used. Text decision will be made in December 2017.
