ENGS 252 – Lit the New African Diaspora

Course Description: Recent topics: "The Beat Generation;" "Literature and Society in Modern Ireland;" "Dostoevsky's Influence on 20th Century American Literature." Prerequisites: ENGS 100; and one of the following pairs of courses: ENGS 021 and ENGS 022, ENGS 023 and ENGS 024, or ENGS 027 and ENGS 028; Instructor permission for graduate students.

Section Description: ENGS 252: Literature of the New African Diaspora(1980s-present) This Course examines the works of some of the most prominent African immigrant writers located in the US and Europe. The following texts refracting African immigrants’ life-worlds and lived- experiences as they move in and out of different African and diasporic locations will be examined in detail: Chimamanda Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus and Americanah, Chris Abani’s The Virgin of Flames and Grace Land, and Leila Aboulela’s The Translator and Minaret
