THE 010 – Acting I: Intro to Acting

Credits: 3.00

Course Description: Exercises to increase self-awareness and heighten perceptions of human behavior. Basics of script analysis and development of vocal and physical skills through practice and performance.

Section Description: The Introduction to Acting THE 010 course provides students who are non-theatre majors/minors with the basic training and tools for acting on the stage. The course covers body energy, breathing, diction, and improvisational approaches to building a character. Assigned monologue and scene work will provide students an opportunity to learn about script analysis, dramatic conflict, character-driven objectives, and the importance of listening when acting. Written assignments throughout the semester will serve to help students further discover and reflect on a character’s goals, objectives, and actions as it pertains to the monologue or scene they are working on. About the Instructor: Craig Wells also teaches THE 096 Improvisation Workshop and THE 119 Performing Musical Theatre. He appeared on Broadway in Les Misérables and Chess. Off-Broadway in Forbidden Broadway (original cast recording Forbidden Broadway Vol. 3), Closer Than Ever, Balancing Act (original cast recording). He also appeared in the national tours of Les Misérables and Pirates of Penzance. Regional Theatre: “King” in Big River (Syracuse Stage); Closer Than Ever (Arena Stage); “Max” in Lend Me a Tenor (Jupiter Theater); and “Sam” in Shenandoah (St. Louis MUNY). At St. Michael’s Playhouse, Craig played the “Man in Chair” in The Drowsy Chaperone, “Ernie Cusack” in Rumors, and “Agent Frank” in Unnecessary Farce. At UVM, he played “Coldwell B. Cladwell” in Urinetown, “Herr Schultz” in Cabaret, and directed A Grand Night for Singing and most recently, Stupid F*#king Bird.
