John Dowland: Lachrimae
This clip is the first section from Dowland's most famous work. This lute 
solo was later developed for four voices under the title "Flow my 
tears." Dowland 
studied throughout Europe with musicians and musical theorists, including 
Luca Marenzio and Zarlino's pupil, Giovanni Croce. He did not fare well 
with Elizabeth, however, being refused several possible appointments at 
court. Whether from religious reasons, as he claimed, or due to some more 
personal dissatisfaction on the part of the Queen, as many surmise, is 
unknown.
