These are the first and eleventh stories in a twelve-part series featuring the Coopers, a young couple of New York. Written in Neal's engagingly frank style, it draws heavily from her own life. These stories were later published as a book by D. Appleton. As was the practice at the time, The Ladies Monthly Magazine of London reprinted the stories verbatim, in 1863. (This version is available on Google Books starting in Vol. 23.)
