Station History

WRUV began as a University of Vermont student club during the early 1950's. The barn behind Pomeroy Hall on UVM's main campus was home to the club at this time.

In 1956, the club started AM broadcasting of music. In fact, WRUV was one of the first AM stations in the Burlington, Vermont area. Simulcast FM/AM broadcasting of WRUV radio began in October 1965.

By the early 1970s, the station removed simulcast FM/AM from their repertoire and became a strictly FM broadcaster. In 1986, WRUV moved from the barn behind Pomeroy Hall to the basement of Billings Student Center, its location up to the present day. WRUV has been simultaneously broadcasting via the Internet since 1997.

WRUV is a non-profit, non-commercial, educational entity licensed by the FCC. University of Vermont students and community members make up the station staff. The Student Government Association provides most of WRUV's funding. Fundraisers and underwriting also provide funding to meet the budget.
