CEDD Members,
The Encyclopedia of Earth recently completed a successful pilot of an exciting new student writing project that provides students with the opportunity to prepare articles for online publication if they meet the Encyclopedia’s standards and are approved in the usual way by a Topic Editor.
Faculty members at three universities (Mt. Holyoke, Texas Tech and Boston University) invited their students to submit papers prepared for their advanced classes to the EoE’s editorial review after being approved by their instructor. This project provides a means for students to experience the process of professional writing at all levels. The outcome, if successful, is an e-published article that they can reference in their future careers. The articles also provide students and instructors at other institutions with ideas about what is being studied at these schools.
The pilot has worked very well so we are now extending this invitation for you to consider for your students. The means can be a regular class, an honors class, or an independent project, as long as the level of the article is appropriate for the EoE. We encourage you to be creative in adapting this model to your circumstances.
The following pages will give details about the process we are using, and include links to examples of student articles.
