The University of Vermont World Wide Web Project Practices and PoliciesIntroductionThe World Wide Web offers UVM the opportunity to provide a broad spectrum of institutional information to large numbers of people, on campus and throughout the world. The web also provides the opportunities for individuals and groups within the UVM community to present materials of a less public nature - such as classroom curriculum materials, office memos, or personal information - to this same large audience. This dichotomy of purpose has prompted the University to draw a distinction between institutional and personal web pages.Because of the high visibility factor, pages published on the web by UVM individuals and groups could benefit from following some basic style and content guidelines in order to represent the University in a coherent and appropriate manner. These guidelines apply to all members of the University of Vermont community. The style guidelines provided are intended to promote consistency in appearance and content for viewers of the UVM Web site and to provide a framework for providing University information in a consistent and user-friendly manner, while allowing the University departments and personnel who publish this information flexibility in the final design. The guidelines are built upon certain basic expectations: to assure the accuracy of information, maintain the currency of information, assure continuing support of the network, and develop page content that supports the University's mission. The style guidelines are intended to apply to the publication of institutional information on the World Wide Web. They should not be seen as restricting or inhibiting the use of the Web for academic purposes. The content guidelines are based on the premise that all uses of this resource are subject to the UVM Computer Usage Agreement. Instances of inappropriate use will be referred to the appropriate administrative unit. Contents and usage of all electronic pages must be consistent with UVM policies and local, state, and federal laws. These policies include, but are not limited to, policies regarding commercial use, copyright, harassment, and links to other pages or computers.
