Computing and Information Technology (CIT) encourages the development of personal, departmental, and organizational pages by UVM faculty, staff, and students. Before you begin, you should:
  • Become Familiar with the Web: Before you begin the process of making information available on the World Wide Web, you should become very familiar with what the Web is and (generally) how it works. Check the CIT pages for current course schedules.
  • Decide what to publish: Once you are familiar with the Web, you need to decide what information you want to make available. What information you choose to make available is up to you. Keep in mind that if you are publishing potentially sensitive information that you may be able to limit access to your documents to UVM, but you cannot explicitly state who can access your documents.
  • Decide on a server: In order to make your documents available on the Web, you need to arrange for them to be made available via a web server. CIT offers the www.uvm.edu server for university documents, and provides instructions on how to create and maintain pages on this server. Additionally, many departments on campus have their own servers. If you choose to set up your own server or use a departmental server, you may want to look at Considerations for running your own server.

CIT Accounts

Accounts on CIT servers (for both mail and web publishing) are freely available to all eligible UVM community members. All users of University of Vermont computing facilities for WWW publishing are bound by the blanket UVM Computer Usage Agreement. All accounts are usually limited to 3 megabytes of data. This would be any combination of web documents and images, mail files, and whatever other material the user has accumulated in the normal course of their work or studies.

Departmental and Organizational Accounts

Departmental and Organizational Accounts - including student groups and clubs - are available from CIT, as described in the document Department and Organization Host Accounts. This document includes a description of the account policies as well as an application form.

Personal Web Pages

Personal web pages can be valuable tool for communicating information about ourselves to the campus and beyond. Faculty, students, and staff are encouraged to publish personal web pages on their own servers or using CIT facilities. When using University computer systems, or any system on the "uvm.edu" domain, content must be non-commercial, for informational use only and in compliance with copyright and other applicable laws and University policy. The university is not responsible for the content of personal home pages. A disclaimer to this effect appear before any hypertext reference to personal home pages.
