Copyright and Acceptable Uses
The UVM Computer Usage Agreement
and other University Policies apply
to material published on the WWW. In addition, the following rules
govern acceptable and appropriate use of the UVM web and network
infrastructure:
- Accessibility
- All UVM pages should be in compliance with Americans with
Disabilities Act requirements regarding accessibility.
- Copyright
- You may not place any materials owned by others, i.e. copyrighted
works, on your Web page without the expressed permission of the
copyright owner. (Examples: cartoons, articles, photographs, songs,
software, graphics scanned in from published works or other web
pages). Assume materials you find on the Web are copyrighted unless
a disclaimer or waiver is expressly stated. You may include quotations
of a few words provided you identify the author and the work from
which the quotation is taken. If you want to include something
from another Web page in one of your Web pages, then link to it
rather than copy it. Additional information is provided in the

- Licensed materials
- Please take special care with materials licensed to UVM by
their owner, for example, Dow Jones New Service articles or other
material from SAGEUNIX.
These materials are restricted to use within UVM. No one has the
right to place these materials on Web pages and/or redistribute
the materials.
Please note that the University's federally registered trademarks
include: "The University of Vermont", "UVM",
"Catamounts", the official University seal and any design,
symbol, logo, art, word or words associated with or referring
to the University. Anyone who wishes to use the names, marks,
logos, seals and /or symbols of The University of Vermont is required
to seek prior approval from the University Licensing Program Office.
- Pictures and video
- You may not place any pictures or videos of people on a Web
page without the permission of the people in the picture or video.
Every person has a right of privacy which includes the right to
restrict the use of his/her own image. In addition, the picture
or video may be protected by copyright.
- Commercial activity on the UVM network
- Commercial activity on the UVM network is permitted for business
done on behalf of UVM or its organizations, and must comply with
UVM's Policies and Procedures. UVM's computing and telecommunications
facilities and services are to be used for University purposes
only and not for the benefit of private individuals or other organizations
without authorization.
- Private business
- It is not permitted to run a private business on the UVM network.
- Use of University Name
- The University's name must not be used in ways that suggest
or imply the endorsement of other organizations, their products,
or services.
- Fundraising and Advertising
- Fundraising and advertising may be conducted on the UVM network
only under the supervision of officially recognized campus organizations
as outlined in the Faculty and Staff Handbooks.
- Reselling network IP services
- Reselling network IP services over UVM's network to individuals
or organizations not affiliated with UVM is not permitted.
