Searching the University of Vermont’s Bailey-Howe’s Library Catalog System

The University of Vermont's Bailey-Howe Library is filled with many weather and climate files in various different media types (CD, Microfiche, Paper). This page will provide directions on how to find this useful information.

  1. Go to the Bailey-Howe webpage HERE
  2. Under “Find Books and More,” click on “UVM Libraries Catalog.”
  3. There are two ways to search from here:
    1. Quick Search
    2. Guided Keyword Search

Quick Search

  1. Click on “Quick Search.”
  2. On the right hand side of the screen, click on “Set Search Limits.”
  3. Under Language, choose “English.”
  4. Under Locations, choose “Bailey/Howe Documents.”
  5. Skip the Date Limit box.
  6. Under item type, choose one (book, computer file/software, etc.) if you are looking for a specific media type. If not, leave empty.
  7. Click “Set Limits.” You should then see the Quick Search screen with red, bold letters at the top that say, “Search Limits are in Effect!” This is important because at the very least, it will only give you government documents (from NOAA, NASA, USGS, etc.) in Bailey-Howe. Also note, limits only apply to title, journal title, and keyword searches.
  8. Decide whether you want to search for a specific title, journal title, a keyword, or call number, and choose that option under “Find Results in.”
  9. Enter your search title, keyword, or call number in the “Search For:” box.
  10. Choose the number of records per page you would like displayed (the default 50 records per page is recommended) and leave “Title/Keyword Quick Limits” untouched.
  11. Click, “Search.”
  12. This returns a list of media/records that fit your search parameters. If you do not receive any search results but a page that says “Your Search has retrieved no records” you will need to broaden your search by changing the keywords or moving on to a “Guided Keyword” search (see Guided Keyword Search instructions below).
  13. A successful search will return the title of the publication, the author of the publication, the publication date(s), the call number, and its location in the Bailey-Howe Library.
  14. For further information, click on the titles given, and you will be given a list of information regarding your selection:
    1. The main author.
    2. The complete title.
    3. The publishing information/agency.
    4. A description (for some selections).
    5. A link to view more information online (for some selections).
    6. The collection location and call number in the library.

  9. Next, select whether you would like “all of these,” “any of these,” or “as a phrase” for the computer to use to find media/records.
  10. For example, if you would like to search for “daily weather maps,” and entered it in the top “search for” box, you would want to search for this under “all of these” or “as a phrase.” If you use “any of these,” you will get a listing of all the government documents in the Bailey-Howe Library with the word, “daily,” or “weather,” or “maps,” in them. Generally, the best way is to use the default, “all of these,” to search

  11. Leave the “Search in” function alone.
  12. Click “Search.”
