Directions to School

From UVM campus, go down Main Street and take a left on Pine Street by the Down Hill Edge store. Look for the school on your left, one block north from the intersection of Pine Street and Flynn Avenue, across from Noyes Tires and Champlain School Apartments, and next to Lake Champlain Chocolate Factory.		 Champlain Elementary School is located at 800 Pine Street in the south end of Burlington. Student enrollment is approximately 300 students in grades K-5, with a student population consisting of families from varied demographics, ranging from low to high income. Fifty five percent of our families are on free and reduced lunch. Over the past five years there has been an increase in the ethnic background of our students. ESL (English as a Second Language) services has been offered to students who have moved here from Bosnia, Germany, Vietnam, China, Tibet, Romania and Somalia. Last year 63 students (21.2%) received Title 1 services, 56 students (18.8%) received Special Education services and 16 (5.4%) were on 504 plans. At Champlain, there are several collaborative support services in place. Classroom teachers, educational assistants, special educators, and a Title 1 reading teacher work in conjunction with student teachers from area colleges, parent and community volunteers. Our goal is to help each and every student become an independent and fluent reader. In addition to those instructional supports which are currently in place, we are actively seeking literacy volunteers to supplement and support those students most in need of 1-1 instructional assistance.

From UVM campus, go west, toward the lake, on Main Street about 4 blocks. Edmunds will be a 
large stone building on your left 
between Willard and Union St. Park, go into the Elementary building entrance, go up one flight and ask for the elementary office.

 There are 228 students currently enrolled in Edmunds Elementary School. Some of the children come from low income families with few literacy opportunities. Some of the children come from Tibet, Bosnia, Vietnam or other countries. Literacy Buddies work in the classrooms K-5th grades. Some Literacy Buddies work in the kindergarten class doing journals and pre reading activities. Other Literacy Buddies help students with literacy, reading and writing activities. Children who are high risk for failure have been targeted to receive additional support. All of the children and college students enjoy forming close relationships to achieve success. We are fortunate to have such enthusiastic and caring college students to work at our school
John J. Flynn Elementary School

Directions to School:Take Pearl Street all the way until the last 
traffic light (you will be facing Battery Park) Take a right onto North  Ave. Follow North Ave., you will pass on your left Burlington High School, then the Ethan Allen Shopping Center. 
After the Ethan Allen Shopping Center, go through 3 sets of traffic lights and the school is 
located at 1645 North Avenue on your left, across from Birchwood Nursing Home.

The John J. Flynn Elementary
School is easily accessible 
by the CCTA bus system.

 The John J. Flynn Elementary School is the largest in Burlington with 460 students in grades kindergarten through grade five. The Flynn School was built in 1952 and has had a number of additions throughout the years. The most recent being a 4000 square foot Multipurpose Room added in 1996. The school has 21 homerooms, Learning Center (1990) and a recently updated Computer Lab (1998). Students are grouped by grade level with multi-age partnerships. Flynn School serves over 340 families who represent a demographic cross section of the Burlington Community. The school has an active PTO that provides a number of programs to support literacy and cirriculum enrichment. The Flynn School is committed to getting all students off to a successful start learning to read and write. There are opportunities for America Reads Volunteers to support classroom teachers and specialists. There are also openings to work in our Birchwood Terrace and Starr Farm inter generational reading program.

From UVM campus, go north on North Prospect St. to Archibald. Turn left onto Archibald and go to the end of the street. The school will be on your right. Go to the office and ask for Jane Sheppard, the administrative assistant to the principal, Vicki Graf.

 H.O. Wheeler Elementary School is one of 6 elementary schools in Burlington. We have 254 students in kindergarten through grade 5. We are located in what is called the "Old North End" of Burlington. Our community is diverse with many languages and cultures coming together in our school. Our school has a special focus on working closely with our community. We have a school community coordinator as well as a Family room. We also have the largest total number of English as a Second Language students in Burlington.

Go west on Pearl Street towards the lake. Take a right onto 127 which is also North Champlain St. Go up three blocks. School is on right hand side at the first light. (This light is not a traffic light, but a walking light for pedestrians.)

 Lawrence Barnes lies at the heart of Burlington's Old North End, a predominantly low income community. The students who live in this densely populated urban neighborhood rely upon the school to meet many of their basic needs. About one quarter of the children eat their breakfast at school each day and 85% of the children receive free and reduced lunch. Perhaps even more important than the meals and basic educational foundations we provide for them, the school and its personal provide the children with stability, security, safety and caring
We are lucky to have a very diverse student population at Barnes. Approximately 15% of our children do not speak English as their language. These children have special literacy needs. Many of our American born students arrive at school without the benefit of coming from literacy rich homes: they have not been exposed to books, magazines, or literature of any sort. By and large, they have not been read to as preschoolers and are not read "to" or "with" once they are in school. So . . . most of our students really learn to read and write exclusively at school. And that's why we need your help!

From UVM campus, drive east on Williston Rd. Go past the Staples Shopping Center and the entrance to Route 89. At the next set of lights, you will see a Friendly's on the right. Turn right here onto Dorset St. Go about 2 lights and you will see Barnes and Noble bookstore on your left. At the next light, after the Anchorage Inn/across from the UNiversity Mall, turn left onto Corporate Way. Follow this road past the Chinese restaurant on your right and then take the next left into the school parking lot. When you go into the school, take your first left and the office will be on your right. See Barb Gilmore at the front office to find out where your interview will be.

 Central School has a student population of approximately 400 kindergarten to fifth grade students. We presently have 20 classrooms that average about 20 students per classroom teacher. Our students work in self-contained classes with regular education teachers and support staff members. Classroom teachers work in teams of two or three and teach all academic subjects. We also have teachers in Art, Music, Physical Education, Spanish and Guidance. All students with special education needs are fully integrated into the regular classroom and are supported by a team of special education and support staff. We have a total of 72 full and part time employees.

Our students enrolled at Central School live in various neighborhoods in the northeast section of South Burlington. We have a wide range of families with different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. We are fortunate to have housing in our neighborhoods that is moderately priced and those of very high value. We have 13% of our student population with minority heritage. We also have about 7% of our students who qualify for free and reduced lunches. We have approximately 8% of students who qualify for special education services and are served with individual education plans.

Central School students participate in various school activities and recreation programs sponsored by the school or the city recreation department. Many seasonal sports are offered after school and in the evenings. We have a great partnership with the city in offering activities for both students and parents.

From UVM campus, drive east on Williston Rd. Go past the Staples Shopping Center, then past Friendly's and Dorset St. Go about 2 more lights and you will see Al's French fries on your right. Turn left onto White Street. There is one light and then about 1/4 of a mile up White St. you will see the sign for the school. Take that left and you'll see the school and the parking lot. Park anyplace in this lot. As you go into the entrance of the school, the office is immediately on your left. Check in here with the secretary, Elaine, and she will get you to the correct location.

 Chamberlin Elementary School is one of three elementary schools is So. Burlington, Vermont. It is considered a suburban community that is becoming more urban as development continues. There is an increasing population of students for whom English is their second language.

From UVM campus, go south on South Prospect St. and follow it until it ends at the Shelburne Rd. Go around the rotary to go left or south on the Shelburne Rd. Go past the Sears Shopping Center on your right and through about the next two sets of lights. At the next light, you'll see Perry's Fish house on the left. Turn left here. Continue on about 100 yards and you'll see a left hand turn and a sign for the school. You'll enter the parking lot, park anywhere available. As you enter the school, go left and then look for the office on your right. Check in here with the secretary, she will get you the correct location for your interview.

WINOOSKI
JFK Elementary School

JFK Winooski Elementary School is the only public elementary school in Winooski, Vermont. It houses grades Pre-K through 5th and is next to the Middle and High School. Most children walk to school. Winooski is a diverse community with a rich heritage of families who have lived there for many generations. There are also many "new Americans" who have been welcomed to Winooski as part of several resettlement programs. The result is a dynamic and diverse community with many children for whom English is their second language and many families who are struggling financially. JFK has a long history of welcoming UVM education students.
