Goals & Objectives

Each year, the executive board outlines goals and objectives for the coming year. Our utmost priority remains publishing a scholarly journal of high integrity, addressing the student affairs profession and higher education.


I. Produce a journal of scholarly integrity.

A. Solicit and select a balance of article genres (research, literary review, philosophical commentary, personal narrative, argumentative essay, current issues in the field, book review, interview, poetry, etc.).

B. Actively solicit a balance of article authors, including graduate students, alumni/ae, faculty, and friends.

C. Pursue authors who represent multiple perspectives in higher education and student affairs, both on current issues and the journal theme.

D. Provide a comprehensive format to include an introduction from the editor, The Final Word, New Connections, and when appropriate, dedications.

II. Initiate and maintain connections among HESA community members (including alumni/ae, graduate students, faculty, and friends).

A. Invite local authors and all other HESA community members to the Premiere and initial distribution of the journal; distribute journal at professional conferences and through the mail.

B. Provide opportunities for involvement and encourage HESA participation, including:

1. Fundraising endeavors, including annual Phone-A-Thon.

2. Academic and professional development opportunities, such as editing and writing workshops, Practica Spectacula, TVC Tip Sheets, and alumni/ae networking events.

3. Social activities, such as HESA Orientation, TVC on the Town events, and the annual Post-hooding reception.

C. Sponsor and host TVC receptions at ACPA and NASPA.
D. Create and distribute a biannual newsletter for the HESA community.
E. Maintain and update the TVC website, including link to annual alumni/ae directory.
F. Meet annually with HESA faculty to discuss roles and responsibilities.
G. Support the professional development of graduate students who are presenting at national and regional conferences through scholarship awards.
H. Foster a community of learning in all TVC activities.
I. Encourage Full Board involvement by providing avenues for feedback and opportunities to propose new programs and projects.

III. Remain financially self-supporting.

A. Make sound financial decisions.

B. Maintain accurate budgetary information.

C. Distribute budget reports to the executive board in a timely fashion.

D. Monitor the budget so that all projects secondary to the publication of the journal do not compromise its quality.

E. Coordinate fundraisers with the objectives of attaining funds for:

1. Journal publication
2. Daily operational expenses
3. Sponsorship of receptions at national conferences.

4. Professional development, including scholarship funds.
5. HESA community events, including Orientation and Post-hooding reception.

IV. Continue to improve the editorial process.

A. Communicate clearly, constructively, and consistently with authors.

B. Coordinate editing and production teams so that they work cooperatively.

C. Revise the Editing Manual distributed to editing teams.

D. Provide training and materials to editors.

E. Provide a formal evaluation process for authors and editing teams.

F. Maintain and respect the double-blind editing process.

G. Encourage authors’ success throughout process.

V. Foster a collaborative working environment.

A. Make decisions by consensus whenever possible.

B. Maintain organization and a focused sense of direction.

C. Communicate effectively with all board members.

D. Provide feedback, encouragement, and support to one another.

E. Take risks with both journal content and professional development opportunities.

F. Pay attention to timeliness regarding communication and tasks.

G. Be creative, flexible, and proactive about helping others.

H. Enjoy the experience!

VI. Pursue the continued organizational growth and development of The Vermont Connection.

A. Identify strategies by which TVC may more effectively utilize technology in its operations.

B. Consider the development of documents (such as a “Tip Sheet” series and a “History of TVC”) that may strengthen TVC and promote increased continuity from year to year.

C. Engage in researching comparable professional journals and student organizations in higher education and student affairs.
