About the Bioinformatics Core

The VGN Bioinformatics Core provides bioinformatics support for researchers throughout Vermont. We meet with researchers to discuss the scope of projects, develop plans to meet research needs and then carry out the bioinformatics work. The bulk of our current efforts are focused on projects utilizing massively parallel sequencing.

In addition to performing the bioinformatics work itself, the VGN Bioinformatics Core provides data storage, management and archiving for all projects. The amount of data produced by massively parallel sequencing instruments, in particular, is often too much for individual researchers to handle effectively. We maintain a storage system designed to allow all parties access to the data for a project without having to keep copies on local computers. High performance data transfer tools are used to efficiently move the data to other systems (such as XSEDE compute clusters) for computational work. We also create and maintain off-line archival copies of all data.
