A Student Success Story: Isabel Kloumann
- By Andrea H. Elledge
An undergraduate Honors College student at UVM, Isabel Kloumann was awarded the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship on the way to earning degrees in both Physics and Mathematics. During her senior year, Isabel wrote an honors thesis characterizing the behavior and stability of pulsar radio frequency emissions, advised by Physics Professor Joanna Rankin. She was also lead author on a study investigating the sentiment associated with thousands of English words, advised by Peter Sheridan Dodds and Chris Danforth, Positivity of the English Language.
After graduation, Isabel joined Cornell as a PhD student in the Center for Applied Mathematics where she was advised by world renowned mathematician Steven Strogatz and MacArthur fellow Jon Kleinberg. Her recent work on complex networks and community detection has led to a job at Facebook, where she will start working as a Data Scientist this fall.
