Covered Bridge Health Services

Blood pressure screening workshop

September 15, 2007

September saw the first blood pressure screening event offered by Covered Bridge Mobile Health Services in partenership with the Open Door Clinic in Middlebury, nursing students at UVM, and the Middlebury College Spanish Department. UVM College of Medicine students prepared a blood pressure workshop and presented it in both English and Spanish. In partnership with medical students, the nursing students developed a Personal Health Record to help patients keep track of their medical histories.

Access is a big issue in the particular population we serve, and it's important that we educate people not only about the importance of health maintenance, but also to listen and attempt to address their questions and concerns about their health.

— Joe Ravera, Class of 2010
University of Vermont College of Medicine

Medical and nursing students worked with Spanish speaking interpreters to conduct health histories, take blood pressures, and discuss health questions. In total 18 farm workers were screened and two were referred for follow up care at the Open Door Clinic. Farmers and their workers have shown interest in participating in the health workshops and have defined some of the areas of health that they would like to learn more about.
