Guide to Getting a Position

  • Look over the job descriptions for America Reads & Counts positions. Decide which one appeals most to your talents and interests.
  • Look over the School Descriptions and More Literacy Opportunities to get an idea of where you might want to work.
  • Email or call Susan Patterson or Jane Mekkelsen at 656-9684 to let them know that you're interested in getting involved. They'll be able to answer any questions you might want answered before interviewing at a site.
  • Call the school/community agency of your choosing (the phone number and contact person are listed both in their description and on the Contact Lists). If you're contacting a school, either the secretary will answer or you may get the school's voicemail. In either case, identify yourself as a UVM student interested in an America Reads & Counts position and leave your name, phone number, email address and good times to be reached. If you are contacting a community agency, ask to speak with the contact person there or leave a message for them if they are not available. In either case, the America Reads & Counts Site Supervisor will call you back to make an appointment for an interview.
  • Fill out the Applicant Information Sheet and bring it with you to the interview.
  • WorkStudy students should bring their workstudy authorization forms to be filled out by the America Reads & Counts site supervisor. If there are any questions regarding workstudy paperwork, please contact the WorkStudy Coordinator at 656-3450. The deadline for Fall is October 15th.
  • When you have been hired by a school or agency, let Susan or Jane know where and when you will be working.
