About Us

MISSION: the view attempts to avoid eye-glazing officialdom and give our audience a distinctive and timely, ahem, view of the University of Vermont's diversity, personality, culture, scholarship and place in the world. Our territory is the campus; our material is the work and thoughts of our students, faculty and staff. The audience of this university-sponsored publication is primarily faculty and staff.

STAFF: The Website is produced by staff within the University Communications department. The editor is Kevin Foley (656-7997), and the staff writer is Jon Reidel (656-8206).

SUBSCRIPTIONS: We send out an e-mail to everyone interested whenever the view is updated. If you would like to receive our electronic table of contents, which comes once a week when classes are in session, send an e-mail to listserv@list.uvm.edu and type "subscribe theviewtoo YOUR NAME" (without quotation marks, and with your actual name) in the body of the message. To complete your subscription, respond as instructed to the confirmation message. You can unsubscribe at any time, and we will never share the list with anyone for any purpose. If you have trouble with this procedure, e-mail theview@uvm.edu for help.

University of Vermont faculty and staff automatically receive this weekly e-mail; if you'd like to unsubscribe temporarily or permanently, please go to www.uvm.edu/directory then click "Update your directory entry" in the left column. After logging in, you'll have the option to change the "UVM Broadcast Flag" to the letter "n" (changing it to "a" will resume announcement e-mails from the view.)

SUBMISSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS: We answer almost every e-mail we receive; send them directly to the editors above or to our catch-all address, theview@uvm.edu. We attend meetings and scan bulletin boards, but our primary source for story ideas is our readers. Please send your thoughts, press releases and event listings. We typically need information at least a week before its desired publication date.

MEDIA QUERIES: We're happy to try to help if you e-mail us directly, but the best and fastest way for the press to make contact with the university is through the University Communications office. Click on this link for Public Relations Contact Information, including a beat listing and experts database.

HOW DO I SUBMIT A "NOTABLE"?: We're always eager to share the accomplishments of faculty, staff and students in our Notables section. Please e-mail the relevant information to theview@uvm.edu, and we'll publish it or promptly tell you why we can't. The same procedure will work for press releases, story submissions, anything.

HOW CAN I PROMOTE MY UNIVERSITY EVENT? Send us an e-mail, by all means. But the best approach with the widest audience is to use the campus-wide Events Calendar. Adding events to the calendar is easy; see This Page for more information.

HOW CAN I INCREASE THE VIEW'S TYPE SIZE?: If our font doesn't agree with your eyes, virtually all browsers offer an option to bump it up. Look in the View menu of Internet Explorer or Netscape (the "Text Zoom" option).

HOW CAN I PRINT THE VIEW OUT? Clicking Print This Issue in the blue bar on the left-hand side of your screen opens a printable PDF version of the issue (you'll need Adobe Acrobat). Print Past Issues opens a screen with a listing of our issues available on screen. You can also print individual stories by using your browser's print page functionality. The paper icon at the top of all of our stories will generate a "print-friendly" (e.g., text only) version of the story.
