The University: A Sanctuary or an Arena? Fostering Inclusive and Difficult Conversations

The Office of the Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity, and Multicultural Affairs invites all faculty and staff to participate in the 11th Annual Blackboard Jungle Symposium being held March 22 & 23, 2018 at the Dudley H. Davis Center.

As protests, marches, and other forms of activism erupt across college and university campuses, the importance of fostering environments that are intellectually challenging but also respectful and safe for all students, staff, and faculty becomes even clearer.  How can we talk across divides and being about a respectful and open exchange of ideas, perspectives, and beliefs?  How can we honor identities and insist on freedom of expression?  Can the university campus offer a model of productive discourse in a divided society?  Inside and outside of classrooms, these are among the central questions we face in the 21st century university setting and beyond.

Presentations and workshops include:

  • Opportunities and Challenges in Teaching D1, D2, and other Diversity Courses
  • Asian Americans between Black and White: Racial Justice or Just Us?
  • What Does It Mean to be White at a Predominately White Institution?
  • Grab Them by the Mind: An Honest Dialogue About Sexual Harassment
  • Ain’t I a Woman Too? Latinx and Muslim Stories
