Two UVM students have won competitive scholarships to conduct research this summer at institutions in the U.S. and abroad.

Rebecca Mirhashem ’18, a psychology major, received a scholarship from the Amgen Scholars Program to study and conduct research this summer at a neuroscience laboratory at Columbia University.

The Amgen Scholars program provides participants the opportunity to spend a summer working full-time under the guidance of a researcher at one of 10 universities across the United States. The Amgen Foundation aims to promote science education, inspire future scientists and enhance patient care.

Duncan Hacker ’19, a mechanical engineering major, and German and mathematics double minor, received a DAAD-Research Internship in Science and Engineering award to conduct research at a German university this summer.

DAAD-RISE is a German Academic Exchange Service program that offers summer research internships in science and engineering. The program funds undergraduates to complete research at excellent universities and research institutions across Germany with an expert in their field.

In the past five years, more than 100 UVM students and alumni have won or been finalists in presitigious national scholarship and fellowship competitions like these, as well as the Fulbright, Goldwater and Rhodes. Learn more about the support UVM provides through the Office of Fellowships Advising.
