March 15 update:

President Sullivan has approved a delayed opening on Thursday, March 16 at noon to allow additional time to clear snow.

Winter Storm Stella has been the second highest snowfall in Burlington, Vermont, history. Nearly 30" of snow has fallen on campus, and a few more inches are expected overnight. The Emergency Operation's Group, led by Vice Provost Annie Stevens and Associate Vice President William Ballard, have monitored the situation closely over the last several days.

UVM's Grounds and Custodial crews have been working almost non-stop, with help from outside contractors, since noon on Tuesday to try to keep roads, walks and key building entrances clear. However, not every parking lot will be available tomorrow. Even with fewer faculty and students on campus due to spring break, employees are encouraged to reduce the number of cars on campus for the next couple of days by car-pooling, using mass transit, or, in the case of exempt employees with supervisor permission, by working remotely.

Nine parking lots will be accessible Thursday. Please refrain from using other parking lots so crews can continue removing snow efficiently. The accessible parking lots include:

  • Waterman
  • Given
  • Jeffords
  • PFG Garage
  • Harris-Millis
  • Marsh-Austin-Tupper
  • 601 Main
  • Trinity North
  • Mercy

Parking violation ticketing will be suspended Thursday and Friday.

In order to assist you moving about the campus, Transportation and Parking Services will be running the regular on-campus shuttle route with an added loop around the UVM Green to service the front of Waterman for the next two days, at which time we will revert to our normal campus routes.

March 13 message:

UVM President Tom Sullivan has decided to close the university from noon today until 6 a.m. Thursday due to severe winter blizzard conditions. The president’s decision is based upon the recommendation of UVM’s Emergency Operations Group, which has been monitoring the weather forecast closely. Winter Storm Stella is expected to create blizzard conditions with snow fall rates of 1-3 inches per hour and more than 30-mile-hour sustained winds and gusts. Travel conditions are expected to be extremely hazardous. The National Weather Service recommends avoiding all unnecessary travel.

All administrative offices will be closed and events are being cancelled during this time period. The university is on spring break, and no classes are scheduled this week.

Essential employees including emergency support personnel should report to work as scheduled and assigned by their supervisor. Primarily these employees will be in Police Services, Custodial Services, Physical Plant and Animal Care departments. Supervisors will contact employees regarding their assignments during this period.

The more than 300 students who remained on campus are being urged to remain in or near their residence halls.
