The Clinical Simulation Laboratory at the University of Vermont has announced the appointment of Vincent Miller, M.D., assistant professor of anesthesiology, as interim director of clinical simulation, effective September 1, 2016. Miller succeeds Ted James, M.D., who served as director of clinical simulation from July 2012 through June 2016.

A collaboration with the UVM College of Medicine, the UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the UVM Medical Center, the Clinical Simulation Laboratory received international accreditation as a Comprehensive Education Institute in serving as a centralized hub in the training of health care professionals with the ultimate goal of improving quality and safety of care.

Since joining UVM faculty in 2005, Miller has been actively engaged in the development of clinical simulation activities and other innovative educational initiatives. Miller has played a leadership role in the Simulation Lab, serving as associate director of anesthesiology simulation since 2008 and as simulation central line training director since 2010. His contributions have included the development of an operating room simulator, as well as establishing an ultrasound curriculum. He has also led simulation education research efforts, including examining the use of medical simulation and the Simulation Lab to develop strategies to improve the acquisition of skills needed in crisis situations, and to develop strategies to improve crisis team building.

In addition to his simulation-related activities, Miller has served as director of the UVM anesthesiology resident PACU rotation and as co-director of the UVM perioperative bridge course, with additional service on a number of department committees. He has been recognized by the Department of Anesthesiology as the 2013 Resident Teacher of the Year Award and a 2016 Top Quartile Resident Educator.

Miller earned a medical degree from American University of the Caribbean and completed an internship in medicine/pediatrics and a residency in anesthesiology at the University of Pittsburgh.

In his new interim role, he will continue to work in collaboration with Cate Nicholas, Ed.D., M.S., P.A., director of education and operations for the Clinical Simulation Laboratory, and report operationally to William Jeffries, Ph.D., senior associate dean for medical education.
