The Teaching Academy at the University of Vermont College of Medicine inducted a new group of members, including inaugural Teaching Academy Director Kathryn "Katie" Huggett, Ph.D., during a dinner and ceremony that launched the annual “Stick Season Retreat” on December 3, 2015.
The symposium continued on December 4, 2015 with a full-day agenda of lectures and workshops, opening with a keynote presentation by Caren Stalburg, M.D., M.A., assistant professor of obstetrics & gynecology at the University of Michigan Health System, who discussed “A Bluebird Teaching Day – Meeting your Learners Where They Are.” A second keynote, delivered by UVM Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and VT-LEND Co-Director Maria Mercedes Avila, Ph.D., focused on “Equity and Inclusion: Cultural Competence in Medical Education.”
Workshop presenters and topics at the retreat included: Tamara Williams, Ph.D., assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, on “Creating Video Learning Modules;” Melissa Davidson, M.D., associate professor of anesthesiology, and Bridget Marroquin, M.D., assistant professor of anesthesiology, on “How to Run a Workshop;” Katie Huggett, Ph.D., professor of medicine, and Jerry Larrabee, M.D., professor of pediatrics, on “A Low-Stress, Practical Approach to Curriculum Design (For Projects Big or Small!);” Rebecca Wilcox, M.D., associate professor of pathology and laboratory science, on “How to Prepare an Educational Portfolio;” and Jill Rinehart, M.D., clinical associate professor of pediatrics, and Elizabeth Hunt, M.D., clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, on “How to Engage Learners in a Busy Clinical Setting.”
