The Dana Medical Library at the University of Vermont hosted a special National Library of Medicine exhibition that takes an in-depth look at health on a global level from November 16 to December 16, 2015. Titled “Against the Odds: Making a Difference in Global Health,” the traveling exhibit explores the different types of activities that a wide range of professionals are engaged in in an effort to improve health care around the world.

In conjunction with this exhibit, the Dana Medical Library compiled a series of images from the global health activities taking place through programs at UVM and displayed them on its main foyer screen. UVM medical and health science professors and students have traveled to such countries as Uganda, China, Russia, Vietnam, Liberia, India, Tanzania, the Netherlands, in addition to many other locations, in order to learn about health care in different countries. These global health experiences often include providing medical resources and access to information, helping improve essential health care, assisting in addressing deadly outbreaks of disease, and making an impact through collaborations with doctors and nurses in these countries. Leaders and participants in these programs see these immersion experiences as an opportunity for reciprocity in knowledge, culture, and understanding.

The “Against the Odds” exhibit has been made possible by the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health. Link to the accompanying online exhibition audio tour. Visit the “Against the Odds” website.
