At the construction site for UVM’s new STEM complex, things are looking up. Two thirds of the foundation has been laid for the project’s first phase – the Innovation Building – and a forest of steel beams, growing higher by the week,  is sprouting from the concrete. Mysis at the bottom of the lake, and near the bottom of the food web, migrate to surface — sometimes. But some stay deep. Why? “It’s a mystery,” O’Malley says; a mystery that has bearing on hungry fish, the health of the lake, and doctoral dissertations.

There’s a flurry of final calculations. Ogden successfully hits send. “We’re now closed,” the librarian says.
