In honor of her work in psychiatry and care for patients with both mental and medical illness, Felicia A. Smith, M.D., an alumna of the University of Vermont College of Medicine Class of 2000, has received the 2015 Early Achievement Award from the College’s Medical Alumni Association (MAA). Smith will be recognized at the Medical Reunion 2015 “Celebration of Achievements – Legends and Leaders” event on June 13, 2015.

This award, which the MAA established in 2000, recognizes early-career physicians for outstanding academic achievements or contributions through community or medical service.

An assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Smith has – since 2012 – directed the adult psychiatry residency program for Massachusetts General Hospital/McLean Hospital in Boston – one of the largest such programs in the country. In this role, she has redesigned curriculum, revamped the evaluation process for residents and faculty and created a medical education track for residents. The program was hailed as the #1 psychiatry residency program in the country for 2014-15 by Doximity, a national physician network, and its partner U.S. News & World Report.

Smith specializes in the treatment of patients with combined psychiatric and medical illness and the improvement of emergency care for mentally ill patients. Prior to beginning her current position, she oversaw one of the busiest psychiatric emergency services in New England as director of the MGH/McLean Acute Psychiatry Service.

An undergraduate alumna of Middlebury College, Smith completed both a psychiatry residency and fellowship in psychosomatic medicine at MGH/McLean following her graduation from the UVM College of Medicine.
