Reporting on trends in health care-associated infections, an article in U.S. News and World report cites the University of Vermont Medical Center as “one hospital that has been recognized for its initiatives to eliminate health care-associated infections.”

“The academic medical center has significantly lowered infection rates by creating a culture where individuals at all levels understand the importance of prevention efforts,” the article reports. Sally Hess, manager of infection prevention, discusses the hospital’s education effort to teach best practices to all care providers and its practice of encouraging surgeons to provide feedback to administrators on how to make systemic changes that might reduce surgical site infections.
