Three exhibitions of art and objects now on display at the Fleming Museum commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. This fall, museum visitors can see first-hand accounts of the war — journalists' drawings from battlefields and encampments; an exhibit of work by contemporary artist Kara Walker, who, in her annotated version of Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War, turned what had formerly been quaint Victorian parlor art into fueled narratives about slavery, sexuality, violence, race and American culture; and Civil War objects from the university’s own collections, including letters, uniforms, medals and more.

The museum will celebrate its fall 2014 lineup with a reception, featuring music, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar, on Wednesday, Sept 24. Hosted by UVM president Tom Sullivan, Fleming director Janie Cohen and the museum’s board of advisers, the event will take place from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Fleming.
