The Dan and Carole Burack President’s Distinguished Lecture Series will present a talk by prominent political scientist Charles-Philippe David on Wednesday, April 23, 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Silver Maple Ballroom, Davis Center, with a reception immediately following. The talk will examine “The Globalization of Walls and Fences in International Relations.”

David, who is currently in residence at UVM, holds the Raoul Dandurand Chair of Strategic and Diplomatic Studies, is the co-president of the Centre for United States Studies and professor of political science at the University of Quebec-Montreal. He is a specialist on American foreign policy decision-making, nuclear strategy, security studies, armed conflict and peace missions.

“Charles-Philippe David brings a unique perspective, not just as a well-known Canadian public intellectual and scholar in strategic and international studies,” says John P. Burke, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of political science, “but as someone ‘from without, looking in.’ How do others perceive and understand American foreign policy?” 

The author of more than a dozen books, David has published Hegemony or Empire? The Redefinition of U.S. Power under George W. Bush, The Future of NATO and Foreign Policy Failure in the White House, along with numerous articles in scholarly journals. He has had appointments at many universities in France and the United States and has received three Fulbright Scholarships -- at UCLA, Duke University and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC.
