Spray-paint in hand, alumna artist Sarah Rutherford is at work on a new mural on the Living/Learning Center wall. The 2006 grad, a studio art major and Living/Learning resident during her UVM days, is a guest artist in residence with L/L for the week as she creates the mural on the wall that for years featured the El Salvador-focused piece.

Rutherford’s project began with a visit to UVM in March to discuss possible themes for the mural with current Living/Learning residents. The idea that emerged explores the coming of age of the college years, when young people find their voices and learn they have the power to fight for what they believe. Rutherford, who makes her living as an artist and illustrator in Rochester, N.Y,, says she’s pleased that theme resonates with the empowerment and social justice messages of the El Salvador mural.
