In recognition of National Autism Awareness Month, University of Vermont College of Medicine students in the Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Interest Group coordinated several programs as part of the College’s Second Annual Autism Awareness Lunch & Lecture Series

The series featured several presentations, including a lecture on “Understanding Autism” by Patricia Prelock, Ph.D., dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and professor of communication sciences and disorders and pediatrics. An autism video screening and discussion surrounding Temple Grandin’s “The World Needs All Kinds of Minds” 2010 TED Conference presentation also took place. The series concluded with a panel discussion on “How Autism Has Affected My Life” featuring community members sharing their personal experiences with autism. Panelists included: Max Barrows and Sean Metivier, self-advocates; Jean Metivier, a parent advocate; and UVM College of Medicine Class of 2017 students Eunice Fu and Alex Thomas.

The lecture series was supported by the Vermont Department of Health; Vermont Speech-Language Hearing Association; University of Vermont College of Nursing and Health Sciences; and the UVM College of Medicine Departments of Pediatrics, Neurological Sciences, and Family Medicine.
