Mark A. Levine, M.D., F.A.C.P., University of Vermont professor of medicine, has been appointed associate dean for graduate medical education at the College of Medicine and designated institutional official at Fletcher Allen Health Care, reporting to Frederick C. Morin, III, M.D., dean of the UVM College of Medicine, and Claude Deschamps, M.D., senior associate dean for clinical affairs and president and CEO, UVM Medical Group.
Levine has served as director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program since 1992 and is also associate chair for education in the Department of Medicine. He will succeed David Adams, M.D., professor and interim chair of anesthesiology.
A graduate of the University of Rochester (N.Y.) School of Medicine, Levine completed a residency in internal medicine at UVM/Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, where he was chief resident from 1982 to 1983. Prior to joining the UVM/Fletcher Allen faculty in 1992, he worked as a clinician-educator at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa., completed a fellowship in general internal medicine at the University of North Carolina, and held the position of associate professor of medicine at the Thomas Jefferson Medical College and program director of the internal medicine residency program at Geisinger.
During his tenure at UVM/Fletcher Allen, Levine has played a leadership role in transforming the internal medicine residency into a curriculum-driven competency-focused training program, instituting a research component into residency, and creating a competency-based required Acting Internship in Medicine course for fourth-year medical students. In 2010, he was honored with the E.L. Amidon Award for Teaching Excellence in the Department of Medicine for the second time, and in 2003 was named Clinical Teacher of the Year and was also elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
An actively practicing general internist, Levine has directed large National Institutes of Health and Health Resources and Services Administration educational grants addressing the generalist physician and nutrition-preventive medicine competencies. He recently received a UHC Trust Teaching & Education Grant from the UVM Medical Group as a collaborator on the project “Development of a High-Value Cost-Conscious Care Experience for Residents and Fellows,” which explores how multidisciplinary teams of residents and fellows can help create a clinical learning environment that highlights quality improvement and patient safety. Nationally, he is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and served as Governor of the Vermont Chapter from 2007 to 2011. He was appointed Councilor of the Association of Program Directors of Internal Medicine and is active in the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine and the Clerkship Directors of Internal Medicine.
