The newly created Student Employment Office has partnered with SALT, a nonprofit-backed online resource, to offer free financial advice to students and recent alumni. Through tutorials, articles, videos, workshops and more, SALT "helps students and families navigate financing a higher education, successfully manage any resulting debt, and build money skills for life," its website says.

Students and recent alumni received invitations this week to join the membership-based site, where they can track student loan payments; learn how to budget; find scholarships, internships and jobs; and plan large purchases.

This program is just one of the efforts under way at the new Student Employment Office (SEO), created this year as part of the university's Career Success Action Plan. Its main focus, says student employment coordinator Mary McClements, is working with departments across campus to create meaningful student employment opportunities, including federal work study jobs, that "help students build skills that they can take with them into careers."

The SEO is one of eight partners staffing the Career+Experience Hub at the Davis Center. (Find SEO staff at the Davis Center outpost on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) On Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 2:30 p.m. at the Hub, SEO graduate intern Drake Douglas will host an "Intro to SALT" workshop. And on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m. at the Hub, SEO student employee Cortney Jones will lead a workshop, "Budgeting by Using Free Technology," that will explore SALT and other tools that can help students organize their financial lives.
