Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean will give a talk titled “The First Global Generation and How They Are Changing Everything (At Least in Politics)" on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. in North Lounge, Billings as part of the James Marsh Professors-at-Large Program.

Dean, who served six terms as governor from 1991 to 2003, made a major bid to become the Democratic presidential nominee in 2004 using a grassroots approach and innovative use of internet media. He was elected chairman of the Democratic National Committee one year later and pioneered the "50-State Strategy" focused on electing Democrats in traditionally Republican states. This strategy quickly proved successful in the 2006 midterm elections and was adopted by President Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008. Dean still runs Democracy for America, an organization he founded in 2005 that provides resources to advance progressive issues and support Democratic candidates.

As governor, Dean, who is a doctor, expanded the Dr. Dynasaur program that provides healthcare for children and pregnant women in Vermont and balanced every budget he presided over. Before becoming governor, he served as a Vermont state representative and as lieutenant governor under Gov. Richard A. Snelling. He earned his undergraduate degree at Yale University and his medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, completing his residency at the University of Vermont.

The goal of the James Marsh Professors-at-Large Program is to bring outstanding individuals of international distinction in the arts and humanities, sciences, social sciences, and applied fields. Professors-at-Large are non-resident faculty with six-year terms of office who come to campus three or four times during that period for residencies of one to two weeks.
