Political science professor and Saudi specialist Gregory Gause provides his analysis for this NPR story on the recent diplomatic downturns between the United States and Saudi Arabia. The Saudis have been unusually vocal about their dissatisfaction with the U.S. government, particularly in regards its actions (or lack thereof) in Syria. Iranian support of the Syrian regime of Bashar Al-Assad has made the conflict politically important to Saudi Arabia. “If the Saudis can bring about a regime change in Syria, it's a big blow to Iranian influence in the Arab world,” Gause explains.
