Free Press Profiles UVM Effort to Protect Ash Trees

The Burlington Free Press features the work being led by community forestry outreach specialist Caitlin Cusack and associate professor Cecilia Danks to combat the decline of the ash tree. The emerald ash borer, a beetle native to Asia with no predators in North America, has been decimating ash populations as its range expands eastward across the US, often thanks to the moving of firewood. In the hope of pushing back, Cusack and Danks have been initiating awareness programs to involve and incite the public to protect of one Vermont’s most important tree species. “Ultimately, we want people to know what they’re about to lose,” says Cusack.
