October is Disability Awareness Month, and a number of events planned on campus -- from panels to films to speakers -- will mark the occasion.

On Wednesday, Oct. 9, a Professionals Panel will feature six professionals from both UVM and the greater Burlington area speaking about their work in disability services and advocacy. Those looking for a job, internship, or volunteer position are encouraged to attend, network and learn about the panelists' work. The event takes place at noon in the Davis Center's Mildred Livak Room.

On Monday, Oct. 14, an exhibit in the Davis Center Atrium at noon educates on captioning. Learn more about captioning with examples of both good and bad captioning. The captioning event takes place again Monday, Oct. 28, also at noon in the Davis Center Atrium.

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, best-selling author and speaker Marcus Engel will share his life story. Engel's memoir, After This…An Inspirational Journey for All the Wrong Reasons, recounts his goal of recapturing life after an accident with a drunk driver blinded him and nearly killed him. Engels talks about viewing obstacles as opportunities and eliminating self-limiting behavior. He speaks at UVM at 5 p.m. in Memorial Lounge, Waterman Building.

On Thursday, Oct. 17, Student Life's Heritage and Awareness Film Series will screen Neurotypical, an exploration of autism from the point of view of autistic people. The film, which details the challenges those with autism face living among "normal" people or "neurotypicals," will be screened at UVM Thursday, Oct. 17 at noon in the Davis Center's Chittenden Bank Room.

Also on Thursday, Oct. 17, visit Therapy Dogs at 1 p.m. in the Davis Center Atrium. De-stress, and learn how therapy dogs help their human friends.

On Wednesday, Oct. 23, hear from a UVM graduate student about his personal experiences of living well with an invisible disability. Lunch will be provided. The event takes place at noon in the Living Well Office on the first floor of the Davis Center.

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, a roundtable discussion will take on the terms used to describe disability. Hosted by Laurel Cameron, ACCESS Program Director, "Disability vs. Special Needs" will take place at 4 p.m. in the Davis Center's Chittenden Bank Room.
