Awards and Honors

Kenneth Carter, who received his doctorate in chemistry from UVM in 1991, has been named one of this year's American Chemical Society (ACS) Fellows. This program was established "to recognize and honor ACS members in scientific research, education and public service."  After completing his doctorate  at UVM, Carter moved to the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose and later assumed a faculty position in the Polymer Science and Engineering department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Three UVM students successfully completed the Vermont Recovery Internship Program through Vermont Campus Compact: Alyssa Peteani '13, junior Megan Sullivan and Ryan Barry '13. The three were among eight Vermont college students to complete summer internships supporting projects ranging from environmental impact assessment to continued individual assistance, documentation of success stories and emergency preparation initiatives. Together, they logged more than 1,700 hours of time to these projects.

Burton Wilcke, associate professor and chair of the Department of Medical Laboratory and Radiation Sciences, has been invited by Kathleen Sebelius, secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to chair the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Committee, which provides scientific and technical advice and guidance to Sebelius as well as the assistant secretary for health, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration and the administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services regarding the need for and the nature of revisions to the standards under which clinical laboratories are regulated; the impact on medical and laboratory practice of proposed revisions to the standards; and the modification of the standards to accommodate technological advances. Wilcke was also selected this summer to serve on Governor Shumlin's Healthcare Workforce Work Group. This group is charged with helping to assure that the health workforce needs that we will experience under impending healthcare reform will be met.
