UVM responds to health care system reform with professional certificate in Health Care Leadership

With changes to policies impacting the American healthcare system, the industry must respond with new standards for accountability, technologies and training, and project planning with compliance in mind. Designed to address these fundamental needs, the University of Vermont’s Center for Leadership and Innovation annually offers a professional certificate in health care leadership. Starting this fall, health care providers and administrators, nurse managers, regulators, public policy makers and affiliated healthcare industry managers can enroll in the seminar-based certificate program which navigates healthcare reform with a focus on management of systems, people, processes and technology. Students will gain a strong foundation in policy, compliance strategies and leadership tools to navigate an era of change.

Registration is open, and students can begin certificate coursework in October 2013. The program includes nine seminars, which can be taken individually or as part of the series.

Health care leadership requires a systems-thinking approach, with attention to interpersonal interactions, accountability, continual training and adaptation to challenges and compliance with changing regulations. Health care leadership focuses on building resilient systems and staying current with best practices in the field of medicine.

“Vermont is at a new frontier of health care reform,” says Catherine Hamilton, vice president of strategic planning at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont, who is a lecturer in the UVM Master of Public Administration program and director of the Health Care Management Certificate Program. “Transforming Vermont’s health care system will take strong, innovative leaders with the skills, knowlegde and abilities to lead change. UVM’s Health Care Leadership Program is a timely and valuable resource for Vermonters with a passion for reforming health care both locally and nationally.”

As practitioners across the field of health care, instructors will challenge students to explore leadership and policy issues while developing the skills and foundation to advance and lead in the fluctuating healthcare system. The certificate of health care leadership instructors hail from UVM’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences, regional healthcare systems, the insurance industry, regulators and policy makers.
